Boca Raton

Boca Raton boasts the most luxurious country club residential areas, the finest elegant waterfront condominiums, and a profusion of gated and non-gated communities. It is one of the most prestigious cities on South Florida’s Gold Coast and is located in the southernmost point of Palm Beach County. It was incorporated in May 1925 (first incorporation in 1924) after the Boca Raton town council commissioned noted architect Addison Mizner to help plan this world class development. Today, evidence of Mizner’s style is prominent in the architecture throughout the city including the Boca Raton Resort and Club, Mizner Park, and Boca Raton City Hall.

The name Boca Raton first appeared on eighteenth-century maps in Spanish as “Boca de Ratones”. In nautical terms, the word “boca” refers to an inlet and it was associated with an inlet in the Biscayne Bay area of Miami. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the term was mistakenly moved north to its current location on most maps and applied to the inland waterway which was called the “Boca de Ratones” lagoon. The word “ratones” appears in old Spanish maritime dictionaries referring to “rugged rocks or stony ground on the bottom of some ports and coastal outlets.” So, the abridged translation defining “Boca de Ratones” is “a shallow inlet of sharp-pointed rocks”.

Today, Boca Raton is the 25th most populated city in Florida and the second largest in Palm Beach County. It covers over 29 square miles of the most beautiful tropical landscape, and is a mecca for innovative computer development with a well-educated computer literate community as its base. IBM moved one of its computer facilities to Boca Raton in 1967 and in 1981 developed the first personal computer on its Boca Raton campus. Leading Fortune 500 companies have built their home in Boca Raton, making for a prosperous and upscale community.

Boca Raton, familiarly known to locals by its first name “Boca,” has it all: beaches and golf courses; fine hotels and great art museums; jazz clubs and concerts at Mizner Park; the glittery Town Center at Boca Raton shopping mall, and countless family-owned boutiques. It also boasts some of the finest restaurants in the south.

Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood Airport is 19.5 miles away and Palm Beach International Airport is 23.2 miles away. Some of its beautiful beaches include Carlin Park, Singer Island Municipal Beach, Oceanfront Park, loggerhead Park, R. G. Kreusler Park, Spanish River Park, Gulfstream Park and Ocean Inlet Park.

The 2014 population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau was 91,332. However, approximately 200,000 people with a “Boca Raton” postal address reside outside its municipal boundaries.
